Flash Fiction: Graffiti

This was originally written for Flash Friday on 23 May 2014.

Graffiti

Steve stood by his graffitied mailbox. A few dropped paint cans lay around.

“Bloody teenagers!” He would have preferred an echo, but only got the screech of cicadas. At last the postal van drove up and a postman sauntered over. He tried stuffing more unpaid bills into the mailbox.

“Some of us actually pay our bills, buddy.”

“I would love to. Of course, if you came into the house for a moment, I could show you why I can’t.” He kicked another can and sent it flying. The man didn’t notice it as he walked back and drove off.

Steve picked up another discarded can. It didn’t matter if he could move stuff if people didn’t notice. He covered the black spray-painted word “alien” with the more appropriate “dead man” in red. He added an arrow pointing to the house and threw the can as far as he could.

Wonderlike nuus!

Nadat ek vir ’n paar weke van die aardbol af verdwyn het,* keer ek terug met absolute wonderlike nuus:
ek het my meestersgraad geslaag.**

Ja, die einde van die nimmereindigende verhandeling is in sig. Ek hoef slegs ’n paar klein veranderings aan te bring en dan is ek klaar. My artikels in SpeculativeGrammarian tel nou net nie vir my akademiese artikel nie.

*probeer intelligent lyk*

Wonderful News!

After disappearing off the face of the Earth for a few weeks,* I return in triumph with some absolutely wonderful news:

I passed my master's degree.**

Yes, the end of the Eternal Dissertation is in sight. With only a couple of minor changes to go, it may sink in somewhere in the next few weeks that I passed. My articles in Speculative Grammarian, though, can’t count as my academic paper for the degree.

In other writing news
I discovered Flash Friday last week and I’m going to try and write a piece every Friday during lunchtime. I’ll post whatever leaks out of my pen here the following week.

*Holiday packages outside the solar system is expensive, but well worth it.

** It’s a MA in Afrikaans, about the use of Norse mythology in Afrikaans and Dutch literature. *tries to look intelligent.*
